Is there any type of free satellite TV?

You buy the satellite dish and get a variety of free channels with a decent picture quality. Sort of a better TV antenna.

Yes. What programing you can get depends on what country you are in.

For example, the UK has a really nice free satellite system.

In the US there are a lot of programs you can watch, but most are not the kind of programing that most people want to watch. A lot of PBS, foreign language, and religious channels.

Typically you need a 1 meter (39″) dish for free satellite in the US.

Free To Air might be what you are looking for. FTA satellite programming is exactly what the name implies, free TV and radio programming that does not require a monthly subscription fee. It is not HBO or MTV for free, but with free to air programming you will be able to receive ethnic language, educational, religious, PBS, and regional stations. It makes a great hobby.
