What are some cost effective methods to help raise teenage girl’s self-esteem levels?

I am writing a proposal essay on the media’s effect on self-esteem in teenage girls for my college-course Writing class. I need cost effective methods to help raise teenage girl’s self-esteem levels. Detail, please (unless I can find info on google, I keep looking and I’m finding jack squat besides self-help books and that won’t do me any good): how cost effective the methods are, how to implement them, and how feasible they are.

Thanks!

Media makes women focus on appearance for confidence. Appearence shouldn’t be the main factor in determining self esteem. Teenagers need to develop a sense of purpose and well being to gain confidence.

So maybe you could write about being involved in the community and school. Joining clubs, sports teams, getting a job, volunteering. These actions allow for teenagers to gain confidence through gaining experience and forming relationships. Also exercise and improving diet can help boost confidence. And not looking at fashion magazines or comparing your body to unrealistic models can help you realize your beautiful as you are :)

I heard Zig Ziglar speak once and he said that the way to raise children’s self-esteem was to get them involved in a church. He said that studies had been done on what made successful children, and the number one indicator was church attendance. You could google him and see if you can find anything on this.

Also check with the Girl Scouts. I’ll bet they can point you to studies on this, because I’m sure their methods lead to higher self esteem.
